Hopak from Mazeppa for Flute Choir (Piccolo, 4 C flutes, Alto Flute, Bass Flute)
Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky, arranged by Gregory M Milliren
The “Cossack Dance” from Tchaikovsky’s seventh opera Mazeppa sparkles with bright and joyous rhythmic energy and serenades with a lilting and celebratory melody. Occurring in Act One of the opera, this music brings to life images of Cossacks squatting, leaping and kicking acrobatically as they provide entertainments for the lead character, Ivan Mazeppa, and the other guests of the evening. Originally a showpiece for orchestra, it makes a showpiece for flute choir equally well. Every part in this arrangement gets to show off flashy passages and virtuosic writing. The piccolo part is a very special feature of this arrangement and plays a central role in bringing this music to life.
